Day One:

On this day, we started work on our poster themes. In class, we looked at examples; it was helpful to see what other students created and helpful to learn how to implement word art into a poster.

Day Two:

Today, I finally figured out what I wanted to do. I choose MasterChef, Chopped and Top Chef. I really like these shows, and it would be fun to do, since I also love cooking. My family watches a lot of cooking shows. We like to argue about who who is our favorite chef and which chef should be sent home. We like to say,"You've been chopped" and "Please remove your apron and leave."

Day Three:

I started sketching out ideas for the posters and the possible assembly. The basic forms were the from the logos themselves: a knife and a butchers knife. Also, MasterChef has a familiar logo, which I hoped to incorporate. These are my first sketches.

Day Four:

I started researching most popular sayings from each of the shows. Top chef was the hardest to find quotes. It was the easiest quotes to find from MasterChef.

Day Five:

Once I got the quotes, I started adding the quotes around the knives and the MasterChef logo. I also wanted bold-lettered type face for the titles. It looked like this.

Day Six:

I was still trying to figure out what font I wanted to use for the title and also the most popular quotes. It took me about 2 hours to find the fonts that I wanted to use. I and pleased with the outcome. I ended up asking for opinions. Based the feedback, I changed the letters from outlining the knife in Top Chef, to going around the image of the chef.

Day seven:

I was doing final work on my project making sure I was 100% sure I liked everything, and all looked good.

Reasoning:

What are the subjects of your posters?

For the posters, I chose television shows: Chopped, MasterChef and Top Chef. They are all competitive cooking shows. All of these shows have cooking contests, elimination, time pressure, and unique ingredients.  One difference between the shows is that Chopped has new people in each episode. MasterChef and Top chef have the same contestants, and one contestant is eliminated from each show, until there is only one winner. A difference between MasterChef and Top Chef is that MasterChef highlights home cooks while Top Chef highlights professional chefs.

Why did you choose these shows?

I chose these shows because I really enjoy watching cooking shows. I normally watch these shows with my dad (and sometimes my mom and siblings). I have always been hooked on them, and it brings me joy when I watch cooking shows. I always wonder if I could make food like the chefs make, or maybe even create something better than the chefs – wouldn’t that be amazing!

What did you design first?

Knives are an important part of cooking. I started with the outlines of the knife of the Top Chef logo and the butcher knife of the Chopped logo.  Although it does not have a knife, MasterChef has a recognizable logo, and I wanted to utilize its logo.  I also used different pictures to get other cooking references. In the MasterChef poster, I used an apron to promote a cooking show. In Chopped, I filled in the butcher knife in to add some flair to the theme. In Top Chef, I added a cook into the poster to make it pop and tie all the posters together. I then added the orange background. As the final step, I colored the apron, the butcher knife, and the chef – in red.

Why did you choose the fonts you choose?

I choose the fonts for the titles and the quotations separately. I wanted the title font to be able to stand out and not look all the same with the quotations. I also wanted the title font to be big and bold while the quotations are smaller and bold.

The title font is Helvetica Neue, and the quotation font is Eternals Universe.

I also wanted the quotation to be longer than the title to make it feel like it is in the shows, when the contestants get yelled at.

Why did you choose the colors you chose?

I chose red and orange because they are both from the Food Network. The color red combined with a knife and a butcher knife would be good for a horror genre poster.  I hoped to create a playful contrast here. an eerie feeling, even though my subject is cooking shows.

 What are the silhouettes?

I used silhouettes of an apron, a person cooking, and a butcher knife or cleaver.

MasterChef is known for their aprons. Also the apron is the prize as well as it has to be turned in when eliminated. So I wanted to include it in the poster as the most iconic item from MasterChef. For the Top Chef poster, I added a chef cooking with a chef's hat, since this show has the most professional chefs competing and I wanted to illustrate that it has the most professional cooks of all three cooking shows. The most iconic item Chopped has, is a cleaver, so I definitely wanted to add it to the poster.
